The Workshop
Learn how to setup your very own basic website, for small business or personal use!The workshop will include:
- What to know when purchasing a domain, web host or e-mail (and what all of these things mean!). You will leave with a basic understanding of how these things work, why they are needed and where you can get them. You will receive a list of recommended sites for purchasing these products and the average monthly/yearly costs associated with having them. We will also go through options for managing these yourself vs. highering someone to manage them for you and the pro's and con's of each.
- The basics of how to use tools like Squarespace, Wix and WordPress to build a simple website. We will go through each of these platforms and actually create some sample websites. You will see the tools in action and learn the difference between them and why you might choose one over the other. If you bring your laptop you can even follow along and set up your own site to play around with at home.
- Valuable resources to help you find and edit images and videos for your site. We will go through some of the free sources as well as some paid ones and review the benefit's of each.
- Tips for bringing your website from idea to realization and all of the steps in between.
The workshop will consist of 1.5 hours of lecture, demo and discussion with a half an hour afterwards for coffee and chat. Feel free to bring your own laptop to follow along but that is completely optional.
Jesse James Burton
Born and raised in Carstairs, Jesse graduated from Hugh Sutherland School in 1999 and then moved to Airdrie to work as a Web Developer for the City.
Besides maintaining the City of Airdrie website Jesse was also part of the team that developed the Online Census that Airdrie hosts for municipalities across Alberta.
After leaving the City Jesse moved out to Salt Spring Island, BC where he lived and worked as the IT Coordinator for the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga and redeveloped their website.
With over 12 years of professional experience Jesse now primarily does freelance web development work through his company BURTONMEDIA. When not on his computer Jesse enjoys spending time with his wife, hiking and teaching yoga & meditation.
